A Japanese government report says the number of elderly people in Japan hit a record high last year of more than 27-million.

The government survey, released today (Tuesday), says more than 21-and-a-half percent of the country's population is 65-years of age or older. Those older than 75 accounted for nearly 10 percent of the population

It also predicts that by the year 2050 nearly 40 percent of Japan's people will be elderly with as many as one-quarter of the population aged 75 and older.

Japan has one of the world's oldest populations due to long life expectancy and declining birth rates.

Economists warn that the trend may have a negative effect on the economy, creating shortages of labor and increasing the cost of supporting the elderly.
