China's President Hu Jintao is in Sichuan province, adding his support to relief efforts as authorities raised the death toll and concerns shift to helping those who survived.
The death toll from the massive seven-point-nine earthquake has risen to more than 22-thousand, and Chinese officials estimate that more than four million homes in Sichuan province have collapsed or were destroyed.
Mr. Hu arrived in Sichuan today (Friday) and immediately began touring disaster areas with Premier Wen Jiabao. He is urging rescuers to make every effort to find the tens of thousands who remain buried.
Few of them are expected to still be alive. Supplies are short and China's health care system is struggling to cope with the nearly 160-thousand people who are injured.
Another strong aftershock struck near the epicenter of Monday's earthquake today. Xinhua says the five-point-nine aftershock in Lixian county triggered landslides that cut off roads and buried vehicles.
