데이너 페리노 백악관 대변인은 13일 기자들에게 이스라엘과 팔레스타인간의 평화협상은 지지 부진하게 계속되고 있다고 말했습니다.
페리노 대변인은 팔레스타인 독립국가 창설의 과정은 매우 어렵지만 불가능하지는 않다고 말했습니다. 대변인은 그러나 부시 대통령의 이번 순방에서 중대한 돌파구가 마련되지는 않을 것으로 전망했습니다.
5일간의 이번 중동 순방중에 부시 대통령은 먼저14일 이스라엘을 방문해 에후드 올메르트 총리와 회담을 가집니다. 부시 대통령은 지난 1월에도 중동을 순방한 바 있습니다.
부시 대통령은 지난해말 자신이 미국에서 소집한 이스라엘과 팔레스타인사이의 평화노력의 소산을 이번 방문중에 더 진전시키기 원하고 있습니다.

U.S. President George Bush travels to the Middle East today (Tuesday) to continue the pursuit of a peace agreement between the Israelis and Palestinians.
White House spokeswoman Dana Perino told reporters today that there has been halting, sluggish progress between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
She said the process of defining a Palestinian state is exceedingly difficult, but not impossible. Perino adds no major breakthroughs are expected on the trip.
President Bush arrives Wednesday in Israel, where he is to meet with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. The trip will be his second visit to the Middle East since January.
He hopes to build on the latest round of Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts that began at the Middle East conference he convened last year in (the city of) Annapolis, Maryland.
Mr. Bush's five-day tour also takes him to Egypt and Saudi Arabia. He meets in Egypt with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
