South Korean authorities have slaughtered more than eight thousand ducks and chickens to try to control a new outbreak of bird flu in the capital, Seoul.

The Agriculture Ministry says the outbreak was discovered Sunday at an illegally run farm in the southeastern district of Songpa-gu. It is the second outbreak reported in the capital in a week.

Millions of poultry have been slaughtered since the country's first outbreak this year was reported in April. The government also plans to ban the trade of live chickens and ducks at traditional markets.

So far, no human infections have been reported in South Korea.

The H5N1 virus that causes avian influenza generally only affects birds, but people can contract the disease through contact with sick or dead birds.
