버마에서 지난 5일 심각한 태풍 피해가 발생한 가운데, 버마 정부가 구호 물자를 운반할 미군 군용기의 입국을 허용했다고 미국 정부가 밝혔습니다.
미 백악관은 9일 버마 군사정부의 결정을 환영한다면서 버마에 대한 장기적인 지원을 계획하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
이와 별도로 유엔은 태풍 피해자들에 대한 긴급 식량 지원과 구호 활동을 위해 회원국들에 1억달러의 기금을 요청할 계획입니다.
유엔 산하 세계식량계획인 WFP도 버마 정부의 구호물자 몰수 조치에도 불구하고, 10일부터 구호물자 공수를 재개할 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 앞서 WFP는 항공기 두 대분의 식량과 장비가 몰수됐으며, 버마 정부와 구호물자를 나눠주는 방법을 계속 협의 중이라고 말했습니다.
버마는 해외의 지원에 동의하면서도, 분배는 자국민이 직접 맡아야 한다고 주장하고 있습니다.
버마 정부의 이런 조치는 국제 사회의 강한 비난을 불러일으켰었습니다. 수십만명의 주민이 도움을 기다리고 있지만, 버마 정부는 해외단체 직원의 입국을 거절하고 있기 때문입니다.
버마 당국에 따르면 이번 태풍으로 2만3천명이 죽고, 4만2처명이 여전히 실종된 상태입니다. 미국 정부 등은 사망자가 10만명에 달할 것으로 우려하고 있습니다.

U.S. officials say Burma's government has agreed to allow a single U.S. military aircraft carrying relief supplies for cyclone victims to land in the country on Monday.
A White House spokesman (Gordon Johndroe) today (Friday) welcomed the decision by Burma's military rulers and said the United States plans to provide long-term support to the country.
Separately, the United Nations is expected to issue an appeal for more than 100 million dollars in emergency food and relief to aid victims of last week's killer cyclone.
Officials with the U.N.'s World Food Program said the agency will resume aid flights to Burma on Saturday even after Burmese authorities seized relief supplies flown into the country.
Earlier (Friday), the U.N. agency said it would suspend flights after two shipments of food and equipment to Burma were impounded. Agency officials say they are continuing discussions with the Burmese government over aid distribution.
Burma has agreed to accept foreign aid, but insists that its own nationals be used to distribute relief supplies.
The Burmese government's actions have sparked international outrage. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of people are waiting for aid, but the government has refused to let foreign aid workers in to the country.
Burmese officials say Cyclone Nargis killed nearly 23-thousand people, but 42-thousand are missing nearly a week after the storm. U.S. and other officials warn the death toll could reach 100-thousand.
