Witnesses in central Somalia say at least 12 people have been killed in heavy fighting between Ethiopian troops and Islamist insurgents.
The fighting in the Hiran region broke out late Wednesday when the insurgents ambushed an Ethiopian military convoy.
Residents report different casualty totals but all say that civilians are among the dead. Islamist spokesmen say two insurgents were killed in the battle, and accuse Ethiopian troops of deliberately shooting civilians.
Meanwhile, the United Nations World Food Program says a truck driver working for the agency has been shot and killed in central Somalia.
The WFP says the incident happened Wednesday at a illegal checkpoint run by militiamen north of Galkayo.
The U.N. agency condemned the killing as senseless and called on all parties to allow the safe passage of humanitarian supplies throughout Somalia.
