Japanese officials say they have detected bird flu in dead wild swans and are investigating to see if it is the H5N1 strain that can be deadly to humans.
The farm ministry said today (Monday) that three dead swans and another that was ill were found in Lake Towada in northern Akita prefecture.
Inspectors detected the H5 strain of bird flu in the swans and are checking whether it is the highly virulent H5N1 strain.
Japan reported four outbreaks of bird flu early last year.
