시위 주도자들은 이번 투표가 버마 군정이 집권을 공고히 하기 위한 계략이라고 주장했습니다.
태국의 수도 방콕에서 있었던 시위는 평화적으로 끝났지만, 29일 도쿄의 버마 대사관에서 있었던 시위 과정에서는 경찰과의 난투전이 벌어져 1명이 연행되고 여러 명의 시위자들이 부상을 입었습니다.
이 날 일본 도쿄에 있는 버마 대사관 시위에는 150여 명이 참가해, 버마에서 추방된 사람들도 모두 이번 국민투표에 참가해야 한다고 주장했습니다.

About 100 activists demonstrated at Burma's Embassy in Bangkok today (Sunday) to denounce next month's constitutional referendum
The demonstrators (organized by the Joint Action Committee for Democracy in Burma,) chanted slogans against the May 10th referendum. Protest organizers called the vote a ploy to help Burma's ruling generals keep their grip on power.
The protest in Thailand's capital was peaceful.
In Tokyo Saturday, several demonstrators were injured and one man arrested during scuffles with police outside the Burmese Embassy there.
About 150 people were protesting at the embassy in Japan, demanding that all Burmese expatriates be allowed to vote in the referendum.
Expatriates whose government documents - such as visas and exits permits - are not up to date, are being excluded from the vote. That rule excludes most political exiles and refugees.
