조지 부시 미국 대통령은 학업 성취도가 낮은 학교에서 평균 이하의 교육을 받는 대도시 학생들을 위해 종교적인 대안 학교들을 유지하는 것이 필요하다고 24일 밝혔습니다.
부시 대통령은 이 날 워싱턴에서 가진 연설에서 2000년부터 2006년까지 대도시의 종교 대안 학교 1천곳 이상이 재정적 이유로 문을 닫았다며 이같이 밝혔습니다.
부시 대통령은 연방 정부와 주, 지방 정부가 종교 학교와 비공립 학교들이 계속 운영될 수 있도록 도울 것을 촉구했습니다. 부시 대통령은 또 7만5천명의 저소득층 어린이들을 도울 3억 달러 규모의 어린이 기금에 대해서도 논의했습니다.
부시 대통령은 종교 학교는 어린이들이 규율과 성격의 중요함을 이해하도록 돕는다고 밝혔습니다. 부시 대통령은 이를 통해 공공 교육 체계를 발전시킬 수 있다고 덧붙였습니다.

U.S. President George Bush says there is a need to preserve faith-based and alternative schools for inner-city children who are receiving a substandard education at poor-performing schools.
Speaking in Washington today (Thursday), Mr. Bush said that between 2000 and 2006, more than one thousand faith-based schools were closed in inner cities for financial reasons.
The president called for federal, state and local governments to help keep faith-based and other non-public schools open. He also discussed his proposed 300-million-dollar "Pell Grant for Kids" bill that would help 75-thousand low-income children attend the schools of their choice.
Mr. Bush said faith-based schools are working and are helping children understand the importance of discipline and character. He added that work has to be done to improve the public school system.
