미국의 존 네그로폰테 국무부 부장관은 오늘 미국 상원위원회 출석해 중국은 티베트의 망명 정신적 지도자인 달라이 라마를 비방하는 것을 멈추고 그와 만나 대화할 것을 촉구했습니다.
네그로폰테 부장관은 티베트인들의 오랜불만을 해소시킬수 있는 유일한 방안은 달라이 라마와 대화하는 것임을 미국은 중국에 납득시키기 위해 노력중이라고 말했습니다.
지난 3월 중순, 중국내 티베트의 승려들이 주도했던 항의 시위는 중국 공안군병력과의 격렬한 충돌로 확대되었습니다.
네그로폰테 부장관은 23일 상원분과위원회에서 미국은 외교관들과 기자들에 대한 자유로운 티베트 접근을 중국이 허용하도록 노력중이라고 말했습니다.
또 부시 행정부가 티베트의 수도인 라샤에 상설 외교공관을 수립하기 원한다고도 네그로폰테 부장관은 말했습니다.

The second-ranking diplomat in the Bush administration has urged China to stop vilifying the Dalai Lama and instead open talks with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader.
Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte appeared before a U.S. Senate committee today (Wednesday). He said the United States is trying to convince Beijing that only by engaging the Dalai
Lama in dialogue can it resolve the long-standing grievances of the Tibetan people.
Protests led by Tibetan Buddhist monks in mid-March escalated into widespread clashes between demonstrators and security forces. Tibet's government-in-exile says more than 150 people died in the resulting Chinese crackdown.
Negroponte told senators the United States is trying to get the Chinese to grant unfettered access to Tibet for diplomats and journalists. He also said the Bush administration would like to establish a permanent diplomatic presence in the Tibetan capital, Lhasa.
