호주의 수도 캔베라에서 오늘 거행된 2008 베이징 올림픽 성화 봉송 행사가 큰 사고 없이 무사히 끝났습니다.
호주 원주민 아보리진 족의 전통 의식이 끝난 뒤, 약80명의 성화 봉송 주자들은 삼엄한 경계 속에 16킬로미터 구간을 달렸습니다. 호주 당국은 런던과, 파리, 샌프란시스코 등에서 성화 봉송을 저지했던 시위가 반복되는 것을 막기위해 보안을 강화했습니다.
오늘 행사에는 수천 명의 중국 지지자들이 나와 중국 오성기와 중국을 지지하는 내용의 현수막을 흔들었습니다. 이와 함께 티베트 지지자들이 티베트 기와 중국의 인권상황을 비난하는 내용의 현수막을 흔들었으나 중국 지지자들의 수에는 크게 못 미쳤습니다.
호주 당국은 중국과 티베트 지지자들 간에 난투극이 벌어져 적어도 7명이 체포됐다고 밝혔습니다.

The Australian leg of the Olympic torch relay was completed today (Thursday) in the capital city of Canberra without major incident.
About 80 runners carried the torch along the heavily guarded 16-kilometer route after a traditional Aboriginal cleansing ceremony. Authorities increased security to prevent a repeat of chaotic demonstrations that marred the torch's relay in London, Paris and San Francisco.
Thousands of pro-Chinese supporters, many of them students, traveled to Canberra to support the torch relay. Many waved Chinese flags and chanted pro-Chinese slogans. They outnumbered pro-Tibetan protesters carrying Tibetan flags or placards criticizing Beijing's human rights record.
Authorities say scuffles broke out between the two groups, and at least seven people were arrested, including one man who leaped from the crowd into the path of a torch carrier.
