Sudan has begun conducting its first census in 15 years, as part of the peace deal that ended the country's 21-year north-south civil war.
The census, funded jointly by the Sudanese government and the United Nations, will help determine the distribution of wealth and power and to set constituencies before Sudan's first democratic elections in 23 years, due next year.
The census has been repeatedly delayed over concerns that it would not properly count southerners.
The south is concerned that hundreds of thousands of southerners who were displaced or fled across the border to escape fighting have not been able to return home and will not be counted.
The south's semi-autonomous government says that since religion and ethnicity will not be recorded, the many displaced southerners living at the north could be counted as northerners.
