티베트의 정신적 지도자 달라이 라마가 티베트인들과 중국 정부간의 분쟁을 해결하는데 미국의 도움이 필요하다고 말했습니다.
달라이 라마는 어제 미국 중서부 미시간 주의 앤 아버에서 부시 미국 대통령의 티베트 특사인 폴라 도브리안스키 국무부 차관과 만나 이같이 말했습니다.
이에 대해 도브리안스키 차관은 부시 대통령이 달라이 라마와 중국 지도자들간의 대화 필요성을 꾸준히 지지해왔다고 밝혔습니다.
도브리안스키 차관은 이번 회동에 앞서 미국 워싱턴 포스트 신문에 기고한 글에서, 티베트인들에게 폭력을 자제하고 중국에서의 진정한 자치를 받아들일 것을 설득할 수 있는 인물은 달라이 마라 뿐이라고 밝혔습니다.

Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, says Tibetans need U.S. help in resolving their conflict with the Chinese government.
The Dalai Lama discussed the situation Monday with a top U.S. official for Tibetan affairs, Paula Dobriansky, at a meeting in (the midwestern U.S. city of) Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Dobriansky (the U.S. special coordinator for Tibetan issues and under secretary of state for democracy and global affairs) said President Bush has been a steadfast supporter of the need for a dialogue between the Dalai Lama and Chinese leaders.
Ahead of the meeting, Dobriansky said (in an article in The Washington Post) the Dalai Lama is the only person with the influence and credibility to persuade Tibetans to refrain from violence and accept genuine autonomy within China.
She also said the Chinese government should cease its repressive measures and allow Tibetans to practice their religion and preserve their cultural identity.
China's official Xinhua news agency reported that the two met despite China's calls for the United States not to support the Dalai Lama's alleged separatist activities.
