The New York Times newspaper reports that U.S. military commanders in Afghanistan have asked U.S. officials for permission to attack Pakistani militants in the tribal areas inside Pakistan.
The newspaper says (in an article published today/Sunday that) senior Bush administration officials have denied the requests out of concern that attacking Pakistani radicals may anger the country's new government, which is negotiating with the militants.
U.S. intelligence officials say Pakistani militants in the tribal areas have allied with al Qaeda in plotting attacks against American and allied troops in Afghanistan.
The newspaper says the U.S. military's proposals included limited cross-border artillery strikes, missile attacks by remotely piloted Predator (drone) aircraft or raids by small teams of CIA paramilitary forces or Special Operations Forces.
The United States currently uses drone attacks to target Arab and foreign militants in the region.
