Pope Benedict has celebrated an outdoor Mass for tens of thousands of people in Washington, D.C., on his first tour of the United States as head of the Roman Catholic Church.
Dressed in a red robe and golden miter, Pope Benedict told the 45,000 worshipers gathered at a baseball stadium today that the Catholic church is at a crossroads.
He expressed concern about what he called a disturbing breakdown in the foundations of society -- including people's alienation, violence and a growing forgetfulness of God.
He urged Catholic leaders to better promote faith, hope and unity in an increasingly secular and materialistic culture.
The pope also expressed regret about the sexual abuse of children by priests across the United States in recent decades.
He spoke in English and briefly in Spanish, appealing to the growing number of Catholic Hispanics in the U.S.
