미국을 방문중인, 로마교황, 베네딕토 16세는 일부 카톨릭 신부들에 의한 어린이 성폭행 희생자들에게 온정을 베풀도록 미국 카톨릭교계 주교들에게 촉구했습니다. 카톨릭신부들에 의한 성폭행은 최근 몇 년동안 미국 카톨릭교회의 명망을 크게 실추시켰습니다.
로마교황은 그 밖에도 신앙인들에 대한 가장 큰 위협은 세속주의와 물질주의 또 개인주의라고 경고하고, 카톨릭교회 주교들은 새 이민자들을 환영해야 할것이라고 권고하기도 했습니다.
베네딕토 16세 교황은 16일 이곳 워싱턴 에서 일단의 주교들에 대한 공식 강론중에 그같이 호소했습니다.
로마교황, 베네딕토 16세는 이곳 워싱턴 디씨에 있는 성모 마리아 대성당 에서 16일 강론을 했습니다. 이 성당은 세계 최대 카톨릭예배소의 하나이고 북미주에서는 가장 큰 규모의 대성당입니다. 로마교황은 이번 강론에서 무엇보다 일부 카톨릭 신부들에 의한 어린이 성폭행관련 일대 추문사건을 가리켜 그 수습방식이 때로 매우 허술했다고 지적하고 카톨릭 주교들에게 잘못을 바로잡을 것을 촉구했습니다.
굳게 믿었던 신부들에게 성폭행당한 어린이들은, 신뢰감의 파열로 큰 상처를 입었다며, 로마교황은, 제아무리 사소한 아픔이라도 그 치유과정을 장려하고 서로간의 화해를 증진하며 심각한 불이익을 당한 희생자들에게 온정의 손길을 뻗치는 것은 하나님으로 부터 부여받은 모든 성직자들의 책임이라고 강조했습니다.
베네딕토 16세는 또 주교들에게 어린이 성폭행의 결과로 빚어진 수치스러운 경험들을 솔직히 인정하도록 모든 카톨릭 신부들과 적극 대화할 것도 권했습니다. 현 상황을 치유하기 위한 카톨릭교회의 여러 방침과 활동계획들은 보다 광범위한 배경을 토대로 거시적으로 검토될 필요가 있다고 로마교황은 강조했습니다.
젊은이들과 어른들 모두에게 건전한 도의적 방안이 제시되기 위해서는, 사회 전체에 팽배하는 가치관을 재평가하는 작업이 시급하다고 로마교황은 말했습니다. 부모들과 종교 지도자, 교리담당자들은 물론 언론계와 연예 흥행업계 모두 이 작업에 일익을 담당해야 할것이라며 교황은 사회 모든 구성원이 도의적 재생작업에 기여하고 그로부터 혜택을 입을 수 있어야 할 것이라고 강조했습니다.
강론 후반부에 교황은 또 믿음생활을 위협하는 가장 큰 위협은 세속주의와 물질주의 그리고 개인주의라고 경고하고 믿음을 보다 돈독히 할수 있는 교육 활동계획들을 크게 확대해 나가야 할것이라고 촉구했습니다.
로마교황은 미국 카톨릭교회의 다양성을 찬양하고 주교들에게 새이민자들을 환영할 것을 간곡히 요청했습니다.
17일 오전 로마교황은 이곳 워싱턴에 있는 야구경기장에서 야외미사를 집전합니다. 이 구장은 지난 달에 처음 개장했습니다.
이어 17일 오후 교황 베네딕토 16세는 카톨릭대학교에서 교계 교육자들에게 강론하고 초교파적인 모임을 주관할 예정입니다.

Pope Benedict has urged American Catholic bishops to reach out to the child victims of sex abuse by Roman Catholic priests - a scandal that has tarnished the reputation of the Church over the past several years. The pontiff made his appeal during a formal address to a group of bishops in Washington late Wednesday. VOA's Alex Villarreal reports.
Pope Benedict delivered his address at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C., the largest Roman Catholic Church in North America, and one of the ten largest churches in the world.
He acknowledged that the scandal involving sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests was "sometimes very badly handled" and called upon the bishops to rectify the situation.
"It is your God-given responsibility as pastors to bind up the wounds caused by every breach of trust, to foster healing, to promote reconciliation and to reach out with loving concern to those so seriously wronged."
The pontiff also encouraged bishops to reach out to Catholic priests and help them come to terms with the shame they have experienced as a result of the crisis. He said the policies and programs adopted to heal the situation need to be placed in a wider context
"We need to reassess urgently the values underpinning society, so that a sound moral formation can be offered to young people and adults alike. All have a part to play in this task - not only parents, religious leaders and catechists, but the media and entertainment industries as well. Indeed, every member of society can contribute to this moral renewal and benefit from it."
Later in his address, the pope warned against secularism, materialism and individualism as potential threats to the way people exercise their faith. He called for the expansion of Catholic education programs to restore dedication to the faith.
The pope praised the American Catholic community for its diversity and encouraged bishops to welcome new immigrants.
Just before the remarks, Pope Benedict led the evening prayer service, called Vespers.
On Thursday, the pontiff is set to deliver a morning mass at Nationals Park, home to Washington's major-league baseball team. This will be the first non-sporting event in the stadium since it opened last month.
Later in the day, the pope will address Catholic educators at the Catholic University of America and hold an interreligious gathering at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center.
He leaves for New York on Friday.
