An upsurge of violence killed at least 14 Palestinians and three Israeli soldiers in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip today.
Palestinian medics say Israeli strikes near al-Bureij refugee camp killed at least 10 Palestinians, including a cameraman working for Reuter news agency. He was filming in the area at the time.
An Israeli military spokesman said the attack on the camp was against "armed gunmen."
Earlier, Israeli soldiers backed by helicopters, crossed into Gaza to chase Hamas gunmen who had approached a security fence. The Israeli army said its forces exchanged gunfire with militants. Three Israeli soldiers and four Palestinian militants were killed.
Israeli troops entered Gaza to conduct what the military called a "routine operation" to target militants launching rockets at southern Israel.
