이라크의 과격 시아파 지도자인 모크타다 알-사드르는 최근 전투중 초소를 버리고 간 이유로 해직된 보안군 병력 전원의 복직을 요구하고 나섰습니다.
알-사드르는 14일 보안군은 종교 지도자들의 명령을 따른 것이라며 그들의 헌신에 경의를 표해야 한다고 말했습니다.
이라크 관리들은 앞서 13일 병사와 경찰관 1천3백명이 바스라와 다른 시아파 민병대 거점지에서 민병대와의 전투를 거부했다는 이유로 이들을 해직시켰습니다. 당국자들은 일부 병사들과 경찰관들이 알-사드르의 마흐디 민병대를 포함해 민병대들에 무기와 장비를 넘겨줬다고 시인했습니다.
누리 알-말리키 이라크 총리는 지난 달 바스라에서 시아파 무장세력 소탕을 지시해 마흐디 민병대와의 치열한 전투를 불러일으켰습니다.
한편, 이라크군은 이날 바스라에서 범죄단 수색작업을 벌이던 중 두달 전 납치된 영국 기자 리처드 버틀러씨를 우연히 발견해 구조했습니다.

Iraqi troops searching for criminals in Basra today rescued a British journalist kidnapped two months ago.
A defense ministry spokesman said the troops found Richard Butler by chance, after they were fired on from the house where the journalist was being held.
