The United States is looking at ways to help countries where rising commodity prices have been blamed for food shortages and social unrest.
White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said today (Monday) that President Bush is "very concerned" and that he has ordered government agencies (the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development) to look at what more can be done to help in the near future.
The U.S. has already pledged to provide the Philippines -- the world's largest importer of rice -- with as much rice as that country needs.
Some of the world's biggest rice exporters -- including China, India and Vietnam -- have cut rice exports to ensure domestic supplies.
The president of the World Bank, Robert Zoellick, warned Sunday that surging food prices could cause 100 million people to fall deeper into poverty.
