The president of the International Olympics Committee has called persistent anti-China protests of the international torch relay a "crisis" for the Olympics, but voiced confidence the controversy will pass.

Speaking ahead of a meeting of top IOC officials in Beijing today (Thursday), Jacques Rogge said the committee was "saddened" by demonstrations that have disrupted the carrying of the torch in London, Paris and San Francisco.

He added, however, that the IOC has weathered many bigger storms such as the 1972 Munich killings of Israeli athletes and the boycotts of the 1980s.

Rogge also urged China to respect its pledge to improve its human rights record in the run-up to the Beijing Games, a comment that spurred a sharp rebuke from China's Foreign Ministry.

In response, a ministry spokeswoman said China hopes the IOC will keep politics out of the Beijing Olympics. She played down talk of a crisis and said Beijing will not engage in discussions on its human rights performance.
