이 전투는 시아파 과격 성직자 모크타다 알-사드르가 자신에게 충성하는 수많은 무장 분자들을 두고 있는 한 동네에서 6일 벌어졌습니다.
당국자들은 이 전투로 여성과 아이들도 포함해 적어도 78명이 다쳤다고 말했습니다.
미군 대변인은 범죄자들이 바그다드 시내 최대 식료품 시장가운데 하나인 자밀라 시장을 향해 미사일을 발사했다고 비난했습니다. 이 대변인은 앞서 6일 미군 헬기 한대가 사드르 시티를 공격해 범죄자 9명을 살해했다고 말했습니다.
사드르 시티에서 당국자들은 지난 달 말 이라크 정부군과 연합군이 알-사드르 민병대와 치명적인 교전을 벌인 뒤에 내려진 차량 통행 금지령을 계속 시행하고 있습니다.
알-사드르는 지난 주 정전을 촉구한 바 있습니다.

Iraqi authorities say U.S. and Iraqi forces are battling gunmen in Baghdad's Sadr City district, leaving at least 22 people dead.
The fighting erupted today (Sunday) in a neighborhood where radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr has many armed loyalists.
Officials say at least 78 people, including women and children, are wounded.
The Jamila market -- one of Baghdad's biggest food bazaars -- was set ablaze during the clashes.
A U.S. military spokesman (Colonel Steve Stover) accused criminals of firing missiles at the market. He said that earlier today, U.S. helicopters attacked and killed nine "criminals" in the area.
Authorities have enforced a vehicle ban on Sadr City since deadly street fighting erupted between al-Sadr's militia and Iraqi and foreign forces late last month.
The cleric called a ceasefire last week.
