자크 로게 국제올림픽위원회, IOC 위원장은 5일 중국 정부의 티벳 시위 유혈 진압사태와 관련해 각 국 정부가 오는 2008 베이징 올림픽을 거부할 것으로 보지 않는다고 5일 밝혔습니다.
로게 위원장은 이 날 싱가포르를 방문해 IOC는 2008년 올림픽을 중국에서 개최하는 데 대해 유감이 없다며 이같이 밝혔습니다.
그러나 로게 위원장은 IOC 이사회는 국제인권단체 앰네스티 인터내셔널이 며칠 뒤 제출할 예정인 새로운 보고서를 검토할 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
앰네스티 인터내셔널은 이에 앞서 지난 1일 이번 올림픽은 지금까지 중국의 개혁에 촉매제가 되는 데 실패했다고 밝혔습니다. 앰네스티 인터내셔널은 중국 정부가 최근 몇주 간 중대한 인권 유린을 자행했다고 비난했습니다.
프랑스의 한 인권 담당 당국자는 중국이 정치수들을 석방하고, 티벳의 정신적 지도자인 달라이 라마와의 대화를 재개하지 않는다면 니콜라스 사르코지 프랑스 대통령은 올림픽 개막식을 거부할 것이라고 밝혔습니다.(끝)
International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge says he sees no momentum among governments to boycott the summer games in Beijing following China's crackdown on anti-government protesters in Tibet.
Rogge said today (Saturday) (during a visit to Singapore) that the IOC has no regrets about awarding the 2008 games to China.
But Rogge says the IOC Executive Committee will review a new report from the human rights group Amnesty International in the coming days.
Amnesty International said Tuesday that the Olympic Games have so far failed to act as a catalyst for reform in China. The group accused Beijing of committing serious rights violations in recent weeks.
A French human rights official says French President Nicolas Sarkozy may decide later this year to boycott the opening Olympic ceremony because of the Chinese crackdown in Tibet.
But Human Rights Minister Rama Yade now denies earlier reports that she said the French President would set conditions that China must meet before he attends the games.
