The head of the U.S. central bank says a recession "is possible" for the U.S. economy this year.
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke made the comments to a key congressional committee today. He also said there may be little, if any, economic growth in the first half of this year.
Bernanke said he expects interest rate cuts and other steps taken to bolster the U.S. economy will help growth resume in the last half of this year and next year.
Senators questioned Bernanke about recent efforts to aid the U.S. financial system, which some economists say is in danger of stalling because of a crisis of credit and confidence.
The Fed facilitated the controversial takeover of a troubled investment bank Bear Stearns by another firm. Bernanke says the action was "extraordinary" but needed to prevent "severe" economic consequences.
