European Union foreign ministers are expected to consider how to respond to China's crackdown in Tibet, after some politicians have called for a boycott of this year's Olympics in Beijing.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy Tuesday suggested a boycott of the Opening Ceremonies. German President Horst Koehler said he will stay home, but Chancellor Angela Merkel has said the decision was not related to Tibet.

Several of the foreign ministers - in BrdoPri Krajnu, Slovenia for two days of talks - took a "wait-and-see" approach to the crisis. The official EU line has been to call for restraint and to urge China to open a dialogue on cultural rights with the Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.

The European Parliament, which has no direct say over EU foreign policy, has invited the Dalai Lama to the EU assembly to plead his cause. However a full boycott - such as the one the United States imposed on the 1980 Games in Moscow - is not expected.

Several Olympic sponsors - including Coca Cola, Samsung and Lenovo - have continued to express support for the Games, which open August eighth in Beijing. Adidas sportswear company has said it is conscious of the situation in Tibet, but a boycott would be counterproductive.
