U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte has rejected accusations that his visit to Pakistan is aimed at dictating policies to the new Pakistani government.

In Karachi today, Negroponte said he has no hidden agenda and no desire to interfere in Pakistan's political arrangements.

He and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher arrived in Pakistan Tuesday, shortly before Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani was sworn in to office.

Pakistani newspapers say the U.S. envoys should not be visiting Pakistan while its new leaders are still working out their policies.

Negroponte also rejected a report in the Washington Post newspaper that U.S. forces have recently escalated air strikes against al-Qaida targets in Pakistan's tribal areas. He says Washington only acts against militants in cooperation with Pakistani authorities.

Negroponte said Washington does not believe in talking to militants who can not be persuaded to renounce violence. But he also said some elements among the militants could be persuaded to join the political process.

Pakistani President Musharraf has been a strong U.S. ally in the fight against al-Qaida and Taliban militants. His position has weakened since his political rivals won parliamentary elections last month.
