미국의 한 군수품 공급업체가 아프가니스탄 군과 경찰에 옛 공산권 국가들의 노후한 탄약 등 군수품을 공급했다고, 미국의 뉴욕타임스 신문이 보도했습니다.
뉴욕타임스 신문은 27일, AEY라는 군수업체가 지난해 1월 연방정부에서 약 3억달러 규모의 군수물자 공급계약을 따냈다고 밝혔습니다. 이 신문은 AEY사가 이 분야에서 별로 경험이 없는 신규회사로 아프간 군과 경찰에 군수품을 공급하면서부터 부상했다고 말했습니다.
이 신문은, 이 업체가 40년 이상된 낡은 탄약을 아프가니스탄에 보냈고, 이중 상당수는 옛 공산권의 무기재고에서 조달된 것으로 드러났으며, 이중에는 미 국무부와 나토가 신뢰할 수 없고 쓸모없는 것으로 판정한 것들도 들어있다고 밝혔습니다.

The U.S. Defense Department has suspended a contract with a company that, according to a newspaper report, provided decades-old munitions to Afghan forces.
"The New York Times" said the company, AEY Inc., was awarded a federal contract last January worth as much as 300 million dollars. It says the fledgling business had little or no experience in defense contracting, but became the main supplier of munitions to Afghanistan's army and police forces.
It said much of the ammunition supplied was from aging stockpiles of the old Communist bloc, including those determined by the State Department and NATO to be unreliable and obsolete.
The U.S. Army is investigating. A Defense Department spokesman Bryan Whitman said there is no indication that the ammunition did not function as it should, or that it posed a safety hazard.
The Times said some of the ammunition was made in China, and it may have been illegal for the U.S. government to buy it.
The Times said the company is based in Miami Beach, with a 22-year old as the company's president and a licensed masseur as its vice president.
It says the firm also provided supplies to the American military in Iraq and had business in Iraq that included a five-point-seven million-dollar contract for rifles for Iraqi forces.
