미국의 딕 체니 부통령은 중동평화협정이 체결되기 위해서는 이스라엘과 팔레스타인 모두의 고통스러운 양보를 필요로 하고 있다고 말했습니다.
체니 부통령은 23일 요르단강 서안 라말라 시에서 팔레스타인의 마흐무드 압바스 자치수반과 공동 기자회견을 갖는 자리에서 이같이 말했습니다.
체니 부통령은 팔레스타인에게 이스라엘에 대한 테러리즘과 로켓 공격을 중단할 것을 촉구하면서 그같은 행동은 무고한 주민들의 목숨만 앗아갈 뿐만 아니라 독립국가 건설에 대한 팔레스타인 주민들의 정당한 희망도 빼앗아간다고 말했습니다.
압바스 수반도 가자 지구에 본부를 둔 과격분자들의 이스라엘 남부 지역에 대한 로켓 공격을 비난했습니다. 하지만 압바스 수반은 이스라엘이 점령지 요르단강 서안내 정착촌 건설을 계속 추진하고 도로 장벽들을 세우면서 군 기습 작전을 계속 단행할 경우 중동 평화는 실현되지 않을 것이라고 경고했습니다.

U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney says achieving a Mideast agreement will require painful concessions from both Israel and the Palestinians.
Cheney was speaking today (Sunday) at a joint news conference with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah. The vice president said a peace deal also will require determination to defeat forces that commit violence and deny the other side's right to exist.
Cheney urged the Palestinians to end what he called terrorism and rocket attacks against Israelis. He said such actions kill not only civilians, but also what he termed the legitimate hopes of the Palestinian people.
Mr. Abbas condemned the rocket attacks on southern Israel by Gaza-based militants. But, he also warned that peace will not be achieved if Israel continues to build in settlements, set up roadblocks and carry out military raids in the occupied West Bank.
