미국의 딕 체니 부통령이 이스라엘과 팔레스타인간 평화협상을 진전시키는 방안을 논의하기 위해 22일 이스라엘에 도착했습니다.
체니 부통령은 또 테러행위로 부터 자국을 방어하고 자국민을 보호할 수 있는 이스라엘의 권리에 대해서도 논의할 계획이라고 리 앤 맥브라이드 부통령 대변인이 말했습니다. 맥브라이드 대변인에 따르면, 체니 부통령은 이후 요르단강 서안지구도 방문해 팔레스타인 독립국가 창설과 팔레스타인 제도 강화노력에 대한 조지 부시 미국 대통령의 의지를 재확인 할 예정입니다.
체니 부통령은 앞서 21일 사우디 아라비아를 방문해 압둘라 사우디 국왕과 유가상승의 대처방안을 논의했습니다. 미국의 한 정부 관리는 양측은 석유시장을 안정화하기 위한 단기적 방안에 대해서도 논의했으나 앞으로 취해야할 조치들에 대해 더 집중했을 것이라고 말했습니다. 유가는 최근 몇주간 배럴당 100 달러 이상으로 치솟았습니다. (끝)
U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney is due to visit Israel today (Saturday) for talks on pushing forward the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
Cheney's spokeswoman, Lea Anne McBride, says he will also focus on Israel's right to defend itself against terrorism and to protect its citizens.
McBride says, in a visit later to the West Bank, Cheney will reaffirm President Bush's commitment to a two-state solution and efforts to strengthen Palestinian institutions.
On Friday, Cheney visited Saudi Arabia and held talks with Saudi King Abdullah on how to deal with rising oil prices. A U.S. official says the two discussed what can be done in the short term to stabilize oil markets, but probably talked more about what needs to be done in the future.
The price of oil has risen in recent weeks to more than 100 dollars a barrel.
