Human rights and journalism advocacy groups are calling on Cuba to release several activists and journalists who were among 75 people rounded up five years ago in a broad crackdown on dissent.
Amnesty International and the group Human Rights First released statements today (Tuesday), saying the more than 50 remaining detainees should be set free immediately and without conditions. They say several of the prisoners are very ill and need care.
Also today (Tuesday), the (New York-based) Committee to Protect Journalists issued a new report that focused on a group of independent journalists who remain behind bars as a result of the crackdown.
Cuban authorities began rounding up the activists on March 18th, 2003, and later sentenced them to terms of up to 28 years in prison for treason. Some have since been released, including four who were set free in February, for health reasons.
