미국의 헨리 폴슨 재무 장관은 금융시장 안정을 보장하기 위해 정부는 필요한 조치를 취할 태세로 있다고 말했습니다.
폴슨 장관은 유동성 위기에 처한 투자 은행, 베어스턴스를 돕기 위한 정부 지원의 긴급 자금 지원 계획이 발표된 지 이틀만인16일 미국 텔레비전 방송에 출연해 그같이 말했습니다. 폴슨 장관은 베어스턴스를 구제하기 위한 계획은 올바른 결정이었다고 말했으나 어려움에 처해있는 다른 금융기관들에 대해서도 정부가 유사한 지원을 할 것인 지의 여부는 밝히지 않았습니다.
폴슨 장관은 또한 미 정부 관리들이 달러와 미국 시장에 대한 신뢰를 구축하기 위해 노력하고 있다고 덧붙였습니다.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson says the government is ready to "do what it takes" to ensure the stability of financial markets.
Paulson spoke on U.S. television today (Sunday), two days after a government-backed financing plan was announced to help major investment bank Bear Stearns. Paulson said the rescue plan for Bear Stearns was the right thing to do. He did not say whether the government would give similar aid to other struggling firms.
Paulson also said U.S. government officials are working to build confidence in the dollar and in the U.S. marketplace.
New York Senator Charles Schumer, a Democrat, today called the weak economy "the Bush recession" and said the housing crisis is at the heart of it. He said this is the most serious economic problem the nation has had in a long time.
