티베트인들의 정신적 지도자인 달라이 라마는 16일 인도 북부 다람살라에 있는 망명정부 본부에서 기자들과 만나, 국제사회는 티베트에서 무슨 일이 벌어지고 있는지 알아내야 한다고 말했습니다.
그러나 중국은 올해 베이징에서 열릴 예정인 올림픽을 예정대로 개최할 수 있어야 한다고 달라이 라마는 말했습니다. 한편 중국 시촨성에서 중국 경찰과 티베트 시위자들 사이에 충돌이 발생했다는 보도가 들어오고 있습니다.
티베트 망명 정부는 16일 지난 14일 티베트의 수도 라사에서 중국 당국과 티베트 시위자들의 충돌로 80명이 숨졌음을 확인했다고 말했습니다.
인도 북부의 툽텐 삼펠 티베트 망명정부 대변인은 16일 이번 사태로 인한 부상자 또한 72명에 달한다고 말했습니다.
이번 사태는 중국 통치에 항거하는 티베트 독립시위 중 지난 1989년 이후 최악의 사태로 기록됐습니다.
중국 당국은 이번 사태로 인한 사망자 수가 10명이라고 발표했습니다.

Violent protests, meanwhile, were reported today in the Chinese province of Sichuan, with clashes between police and Tibetan protesters.
Tibet's government-in-exile said today it has confirmed the deaths of 80 people in clashes Friday with Chinese authorities in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa.
A spokesman (Thubten Samphel) told reporters in northern India today that another 72 people were injured -- in the most violent challenge to Chinese rule since 1989.
Chinese authorities have put the death toll from Friday's violence at 10.
