유럽연합 정상들은 브뤼셀에서 이틀간의 정상회담을 마치고 발표한 성명에서 오는 2020년까지 온실가스 배출량을 20% 감축한다는 전략을 내년까지 마무리하기로 다짐했습니다.
그러나 정상들은 이 계획이 유럽연합 회원국들에 과도한 부담을 줘서는 안될 것이라고 강조했습니다.
순회의장국인 슬로베니아의 야네즈 얀사 총리는 이 일괄 행동계획이 유럽연합 국가들이 미래의 기술을 도입하도록 촉진할 수 있는 핵심 문서라고 말했습니다.
정상들은 또한 북아프리카와 중동국가들과의 관계 증진을 위한 노력으로 니콜라 사르코지 프랑스 대통령이 제안한, 모든 유럽연합 국가들이 포함된 지중해연합 구상도 승인했습니다.

European Union leaders have backed ambitious goals to fight climate change but stressed that they must be affordable at a time of economic downturn.
In a statement issued at the conclusion of a two-day summit in Brussels, the leaders pledged to finalize by next year their strategy for a 20 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2020. But they stressed that the project should not impose excessive costs on EU member states.
Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, called the package a key document that will allow EU countries to adopt future technologies.
The leaders also approved a compromise version of French President Nicolas Sarkozy's proposal for a new Mediterranean trading bloc that would involve all EU members in efforts to build ties with North African and Middle Eastern countries.
