The top U.S. military commander in Iraq says Iraqi political leaders have failed to make any real progress towards political reconciliation.
In an interview published today (Friday) in the "Washington Post," Army General David Petraeus says no one in either the U.S. or Iraqi governments feels there has been "sufficient progress" in national reconciliation or providing basic public services.
President Bush picked General Petraeus to implement a strategy aimed at reducing violence in Iraq so politicians could resolve the sectarian and political differences plaguing the country. The strategy included the deployment of an additional 30-thousand U.S. troops in Iraq.
Petraeus says the dramatic drop in violence since late 2006 is due to former Sunni insurgents joining neighborhood patrols, and a cease-fire called by radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.
