중국은 올 여름 베이징 올림픽에 대비해 베이징 시내 공기를 깨끗하게 만들겠다는 약속을 지킬 것이라고 중국 환경청이 밝혔습니다.
쟝 리준 부청장은 베이징 시내와 주변지역의 대기 오염을 줄이는 조치들이 강화되고 있다며, 이 조치들이 모두 시행되고 나면 베이징시가 대기 환경 기준을 모두 충족하는 데 전혀 문제가 없을 것이라고 말했습니다.
쟝 부청장의 발언은 에티오피아의 세계적인 마라톤 선수 하일레 게브르셀라시가 베이징의 대기 오염을 이유로 베이징 올림픽 마라톤 경기에 참가하지 않겠다고 선언한 뒤 나온 것입니다.
Beijing's State Environmental Protection Administration Vice Minister has announced the Chinese capital will meet its pledge to have clean air for the Summer Olympics.
Zhang Lijun said Tuesday that measures to cut pollution in Beijing and surrounding areas are being intensified. Zhang added that after all the measures are implemented, Beijing will have "no problem" meeting the required air quality standards.
Zhang's claim comes one day after world marathon record-holder Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia said he would skip the 42-kilometer running event in Beijing because of the city's poor air quality. Gebrselassie, who suffers from asthma, said he was worried about damaging his health by running in Beijing.
Despite Beijing's efforts to improve air quality in time for the August eighth to 24th Games, a dark haze still blankets the city on most days.
