The conservative party of French President Nicolas Sarkozy is facing an electoral test as voters across the country cast their ballots in municipal polls today (Sunday).
Public opinion surveys indicate significant gains for the opposition Socialists in a vote seen as a referendum on Mr. Sarkozy's first 10 months in office.
President Sarkozy's popularity has plummeted, and his (Union for a Popular Movement) party is concerned it will suffer in local elections today and next Sunday in more than 36-thousand towns, villages and cities across France.
Mr. Sarkozy has relaxed labor laws, and unemployment has reached its lowest level in more than two decades. But concerns about a sluggish economy remain high in France.
The president's popularity has also dipped following widespread coverage of his personal life, especially his swift courtship, then marriage to former model Carla Bruni.
