The United States and European Union have filed a case with the World Trade Organization over restrictions imposed by China on foreign suppliers of financial information.

Europe and the U.S. allege that China violates WTO rules by allowing its Xinhua news agency the right to license and distribute financial news from overseas media organizations like Bloomberg, Dow Jones and Reuters. The practice forbids any foreign financial news company from dealing directly with Chinese clients.

U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab says China's restrictive measures place foreign companies at a competitive disadvantage.

Chinese officials have not commented on the case, but have argued before that national security interests require China to regulate the flow of news internally.

This new complaint comes just a month after the WTO ruled against China for its tax policies on imported auto parts.
