앞서 이라크의 자랄 탈라바니 대통령은 아마디네자드 대통령을 초청했습니다. 아마디네자드 대통령은 이틀간의 이라크 방문중 이 지역에서 이란의 영향력을 확대하는데 주력할 것으로 보입니다.
이란은 이란의 팔레비 국왕을 축출한 1979년의 회교혁명 이후 대통령이 이라크를 방문한 일이 없으며, 1980년대에는 8년간 이란-이라크전쟁을 벌였습니다.
이라크의 새로운 시아파 정부는 이라크 안보와 석유자원이 풍부한 국경지역분쟁에 대해 이란과 협력하려고 노력해 왔습니다.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is preparing to travel to Baghdad Sunday on the first visit by an Iranian president to Iraq in nearly three decades.
Iraqi President Jalal Talabani proposed the two-day visit, which Mr. Ahmadinejad is expected to use to bolster Iran's influence in the region.
Iran has not sent a president to Iraq since the 1979 Islamic revolution that removed the Shah of Iran. The two countries fought an eight-year war in the 1980s.
But Tehran and Baghdad have strengthened ties since the 2003 U.S.-led overthrow of Saddam Hussein and his Sunni-led government.
Iraq's new Shi'ite-dominated government is making efforts to work with Iran on security issues and a dispute over their oil-rich border region.
The United States has accused Iran of aiding and training extremist groups in Iraq, which Tehran denies.
