The director of U.S. national intelligence says al-Qaida and its terrorist affiliates continue to pose significant threats to the United States and its interests abroad.
Mike McConnell testified today (Wednesday) before the Senate Armed Forces Committee about his department's annual assessment of potential security threats.
He said over the next year, extremists inspired by militant Islamic ideology will remain a threat, and that al-Qaida's central leadership in the border area of Pakistan is its most dangerous component.
He said efforts by terrorists to develop and acquire dangerous weapons pose a threat to the United States and its allies, and deployed troops.
McConnell also discussed the importance of reauthorizing a controversial surveillance bill that allows the government to monitor communications without a warrant involving people in the United States and suspected terrorists abroad.
