A new law connected to Burma's upcoming referendum on a new constitution has taken effect.
The new law, which took effect Tuesday, establishes a 45-member commission to organize the balloting, which will be held in May. The commission will announce the date of the referendum three weeks ahead of time. The panel will be chaired by Burmese Supreme Court Chief Justice Aung Toe, who also led the effort to draft the new charter.
Any Burmese citizen who gives public speeches or passes out leaflets against the referendum could face up to three years in jail under the new law.
Buddhist monks and other clergy are not allowed to vote in the referendum.
