이명박 당선자는 한국의 전임 대통령들과는 달리, 일본의 과거 한국 강점에 대해 사과를 요구하지 않을 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
후쿠다 총리는 한국과 일본의 보다 긴밀한 관계를 촉구했습니다.
지난 2001년과 2006년 고이즈미 준이치로 총리의 재임 당시, 총리의 야스쿠니 신사 참배로 인해 양국 관계가 급속히 경색됐습니다.

Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda has arrived in South Korea to attend the presidential inauguration of Lee Myung-bak and hold his first summit with the new leader.
Officials said today (Sunday) that Mr. Fukuda and Mr. Lee will hold talks at the Blue House presidential office following the inauguration ceremony Monday.
The president-elect has said that, unlike former South Korean leaders, he will not seek an apology from Japan for its 35-year colonization of the Korean peninsula.
Mr. Fukuda has called for closer relations with South Korea.
Relations between the two countries cooled during Japan's 2001 to 2006 administration of Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, who annually visited a shrine for Japanese war dead, including war criminals.
