미국의 조지 부시대통령은 미국은 아프리카에 새로운 군사기지를 건설할 계획이 없다고 밝혔습니다.
아프리카 5개국을 순방중인 부시 대통령은 20일 가나에서 일명 ‘아프리콤’으로 알려진 새로운 미군 아프리카 사령부에 대한 아프리카 국가들의 우려를 불식시키기 위한 노력의 일환으로 이같이 해명했습니다.
부시 대통령은 아프리카사령부는 외국 군대의 도움 없이 지역분쟁에 대처할 수 있도록 아프리카 군의 능력향상을 지원하는데 목적이 있다고 설명했습니다.
리비아와 나이지리아, 남아프리카공화국은 미군의 영향력이 결국 아프리카를 테러와의 전쟁에 깊히 개입하게 만들 것이라며, 미국의 아프리카사령부 창설에 유보적인 태도를 보이고 있습니다.

President Bush says the United States is not contemplating building new military bases in Africa.
Speaking in Ghana today (Wednesday) Mr. Bush tried to head off concerns about the new U.S. regional command for Africa, known as AFRICOM. He said the command is meant to help African armies better respond to conflict without the need for outside forces.
Libya, Nigeria and South Africa have reservations about AFRICOM, saying the American military influence could draw Africa into the U.S. fight on terrorism.
Mr. Bush, speaking alongside Ghana's President John Kufour in Accra, also said the United States does not view China as a "fierce competitor" in Africa.
Mr. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush arrived in Ghana Tuesday, the fourth stop of a five-nation tour of Africa.
