새로 출범하는 한국의 새정부가 통일부를 존속하기로 한 계획안에 합의했습니다.
이 계획은 이명박 대통령 당선인 측과 보수 야당 국회의원들 간의 이견을 상충한 것입니다. 이 계획안에 따르면 통일부와 여성가족부가 존속하는 대신 다른 3개 부서는 통합 또는 폐지 됩니다.
이보다 앞서 이명박 대통령 당선인은 정부 조직의 업무 효율화를 위한 광범위한 노력의 일환으로 통일부를 외무부와 통합할 것을 제안했습니다. 이 당선인과 다른 보수 의원들은 또 통일부가 북한을 다루는데 있어서 온건책에 치중하고 있다고 주장해 왔습니다.
이 당선인은 취임 후 북한에 대해 좀 더 강경한 입장을 취할 것이라고 약속한 바 있습니다.

South Korea's incoming government has agreed to a plan that would maintain the ministry handling relations with North Korea.
The plan is a compromise between the conservative party of President-elect Lee Myung-bak and liberal opposition lawmakers. Under the compromise, Mr. Lee would keep the Unification Ministry, along with the Ministry for Gender Equality, but merge or eliminate three others.
The incoming president had proposed merging the Unification Ministry with the Foreign Ministry as part of a broader effort to streamline the government. He and other conservatives have also argued the ministry was too soft in its dealings with the isolated regime.
Mr. Lee has pledged to take a firmer stand with North Korea after he takes office next week.
