The main party backing Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has admitted defeat in Monday's general elections.

The chairman of the Pakistan Muslim League-Q party, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, told reporters today (Tuesday) that members of his party accept the results and are prepared to sit on opposition benches in parliament.

Early results show the Pakistan People's Party of slain opposition leader Benazir Bhutto winning the most seats in the 342-member National Assembly so far. Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) is in second place.

Final results are expected late today (Tuesday).

Ms. Bhutto's husband, Asif Ali Zardari, said the PPP would try to form a coalition with Mr. Sharif's party. Zardari added he was not interested in including the defeated PML-Q party in a new government. He and Mr. Sharif will meet on Thursday.

The United States says it is pleased with Monday's election in Pakistan, saying the vote moved its anti-terror ally a step closer toward the full restoration of democracy.

State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said today (Tuesday) the Bush administration hopes that all parties will work together to confront extremism.

Casey urged the parties to accept the results, in which voters defeated President Pervez Musharraf's political allies.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon praised the peaceful conduct of the polls, adding he was encouraged by the commitment of the parties to respect the democratic process.

Neighboring Afghanistan also welcomed Pakistan's election, saying it reflects the will of the people.

A spokesman for President Hamid Karzai says Afghanistan looks forward to working with the new Pakistani government to fight terrorism.
