A rebel group from Nigeria's oil producing Niger Delta wrote an open letter on Sunday to U.S. President George Bush -- who is in Africa -- asking him to mediate peace talks with the Nigerian government.
The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta or MEND says it wants help from the United States to resolve a conflict with the Nigerian government over the distribution of oil wealth.
MEND is also angry about the extradition of one of its leaders to Nigeria after being detained for months on gunrunning charges in Angola.
MEND maintains it wants more of the region's oil wealth to go to impoverished local residents.
The rebels have been attacking oil facilities and kidnapping oil workers since late 2005.
