파키스탄 정국의 최대 분수령이 될 총선거가 18일 오후 마감돼 개표작업에 들어갔습니다.
파키스탄 선거관리위원회는 이날 오후 5시 투표를 종료하고 투표용지를 각선거구로 옮겨 개표작업에 들어갔습니다.
초기 개표작업이 진행중인 가운데 이날 자정께면 일부 선거구에서 당선자의 윤곽이 나올 것으로 보입니다. 그러나 공식 선거 결과는 오는 20일께나 나올 것이라고 선관위는 내다보고 있습니다.
정부가 치안 유지를 위해 8천여명의 군병력을 동원했음에도 불구하고, 무장세력의 공격을 두려워하는 일부 유권자들은 투표에 불참했습니다. 그러나 선거 분위기를 흐리게 할만한 대규모 폭탄공격은 발생하지 않았습니다. 정당 지지자들 간의 크고 작은 충돌로 전국에서 최소 12명이 사망했습니다.
페르베즈 무샤라프 대통령은 이날 라왈핀디에서 투표하고, 누가 총리가 되든 새 정부와 협력할 것이라고 다짐했습니다.

His office is not contested in this election, but if opposition parties win a two-thirds majority, they would have enough votes to impeach him for securing another presidential term by an outgoing parliament.
