부시대통령과 로라 부시 여사는 16일 오전 도착해 탄자니아로 향하기에 앞서 토마스 보니 야니 베닌 대통령과 짧게 담소를 나눴습니다.
부시대통령은 지난해 12월 대통령 선거후 유혈 폭력사태로 얼룩지고 있는 케냐를 비롯한 다른 나라들에서 폭력이 일어나고 있다고 말했습니다. 부시 대통령은 이어 18일로 예정된 콘돌리자 라이스 국무장관의 나이로비 방문은 양측이 권력 분담에 합의해서 케냐가 이 어려움을 해결하기를 바라는 미국의 소망을 나타내는 것이라고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 또 자신은 군사 자문관의 권고를 따른다면서 수단 다르푸르 지역에 미국의 병력을 파견치 않기로 한 자신의 결정을 옹호했습니다.
부시 대통령은 그러나 미국정부는 수단 문제에 있어 활발한 활동을 하고 있다고 강조했습니다. 부시 대통령은 오늘 오후 탄자니아에 도착할 예정입니다.
President Bush says highlighting the success stories on the African continent will help other nations "understand what is possible."
Mr. Bush made the remarks today (Saturday) in Cotonou, Benin, on the first stop of his five-nation African tour. He and Mrs. Bush arrived earlier today for brief talks with his counterpart, Thomas Boni Yayi, before traveling on to Tanzania.
The U.S. president acknowledged the strife affecting other African nations, including Kenya, which has been plagued by deadly violence since December's disputed presidential elections.
He says a visit by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to Nairobi Monday will show Washington's desire for both sides to reach a power-sharing agreement so Kenya can "resolve its difficulties."
Mr. Bush also defended his decision not to send U.S. troops to Sudan's troubled Darfur region, saying he relied on advise from his military advisors. But he insists his administration has played an active role on the issue.
