미국 일리노이주 디칼브에 소재한 노던 일리노이 대학에서 14일 총기 난사 사건이 발생해 범인을 포함해 여섯 명이 숨지고 16명 이상이 부상했다고 당국이 밝혔습니다.
경찰에 따르면 범인은 이날 오후 산탄총과 권총을 들고 한 강의실에 들어와 총을 난사한 후 스스로 목숨을 끊었습니다. 사건이 발생한 강의실에는 당시 학생 140여명이 강의를 듣고 있었던 것으로 알려졌습니다.
존 피터스 노던 일리노이 대학 총장은 범인은 지난해 이 대학의 대학원 과정에 입학했으나, 타학교로 전학해 갔다고 말했습니다. 피터스 총장은 또 범인은 전과 기록이 없으며, 이번 사고로 인한 사망자 중 여성이 4명이라고 덧붙였습니다.
2만 5천명의 재학생이 있는 노던 일리노이대학은 사건 직후 모든 강의를 취소하고 15일 하루 동안 학교를 폐쇄하기로 결정 했습니다.
A former student has been identified as the gunman who killed six students Thursday at a university near (the midwestern U.S. city of) Chicago, Illinois.
The shooter walked into a crowded lecture hall at Northern Illinois University in the city of DeKalb and randomly opened fire. He killed five people -- three of them instantly -- and wounded 16 others before killing himself.
U.S news agencies are reporting that a sixth person later died from injuries sustained in the attack.
NIU President John Peters says the gunman last attended the school in 2007 as a graduate student, but left to attend another university. He says the man apparently had no police record.
Peters says four of those killed were women.
The 25-thousand student campus has been closed and classes scheduled for today (Friday) have been canceled.
