목격자들은 무장괴한들이 지난 11일 바스라의 한 호텔에서 2명의 미국 CBS 텔레비전 방송기자를 끌고 나갔다고 전했습니다. CBS는 납치된 기자들의 이름을 밝히지 않았습니다.
바스라는 시아파들이 주로 거주하는 지역으로 경쟁적인 시아파 무장세력들이 주도권 다툼을 벌이고 있습니다. 급진적인 회교 성직자 모크타다 알-사드르에 충성 하는 한 무장세력은 12일 이번 납치사건을 비난하고, 기자들을 석방할 것을 촉구했습니다.
또 다른 사태발전으로, 이라크의 한 언론사는 이라크 인 기자 한 명이 납치된지 이틀만인 오늘 중부 바그다드에서 사살된 변사체로 발견됐다고 밝혔습니다.

Iraqi authorities say an intensive search is underway for two journalists from a U.S. television network who have been kidnapped in southern Iraq.
Witnesses say gunmen seized two CBS journalists from a hotel in the city of Basra Monday. CBS has not released the names of the missing pair.
Basra is a predominantly Shi'ite city in which rival Shi'ite militias have competed for influence. A Basra militia loyal to radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr condemned the kidnappings today (Tuesday) and called for the journalists to be freed.
In other developments, an Iraqi media organization says an Iraqi journalist (Hisham Michwit Hamdan) was found shot to death in central Baghdad today, two days after being kidnapped.
