배심원단은 이날 오전 27살의 피고인 이모씨와 피해자 인 70살의 한 노파의 강도상해사건 공판에서 배심원들은 논란을 거듭한 끝에 검찰측 구형량인 5년의 절반에 해당하는 2년 6월에 집행유예 4년평결에 다수의견이 모아졌습니다.
재판부는 판결에서 배심원들의 의견이 헌법과 법률에 반하지 않는다고 판단해 이를 받아들이기로 했다고 밝혔습니다.
한국의 사법개혁의 일환으로 도입되는 새로운 규정에 따르면, 배심원들의 평결은 법적 구속력이 없습니다.

South Korea launched its first experiment with trial by jury today (Tuesday) as an inaugural group of nine members advised a local district judge on a robbery and assault case.
A spokesman for the Daegu District Court -- which is southeast of the capital, Seoul -- said that the jury found the defendant guilty after several hours of deliberation. However, it recommended a suspended four-year sentence for his crime.
In the case, a 27-year-old man was accused of robbing and assaulting a 70-year old woman. Prosecutors argued that the man broke the law and that he should be punished for his crimes, regardless of his circumstances.
The man's defense argued that he deserved leniency. The judge sided with the jury.
According to the new regulations, which are being implemented in a bid to reform South Korea's judicial system, the jury's verdict is non-binding.
