파키스탄 북서부의 한 선거 유세장에서 자살 폭탄 공격이 발생해 적어도 20명이 숨지고 25명이 부상당했습니다.
파키스탄 내무부 대변인은 이번 공격이 [북서 프론티어 주]의 챠르사다 마을에서 아와미 국가당의 선거 유세를 겨냥해 일어났다고 밝혔습니다. 아와미 국가당은 파슈툰 족으로 구성된 세속 성향의 정당입니다.
대변인은 아와미 국가당의 아프라시아브 카타크 당수가 연설을 하고 있을 때 연단 가까이에서 폭탄이 터졌다고 설명했습니다. 카타크 당수는 이후 한 파키스탄 텔레비전과의 인터뷰에서 자신이 상처없이 무사히 대피했다고 밝혔습니다.
지난해 12월에는 전직 내무부 장관 아프답 셔파오를 겨냥한 자살 폭탄 공격이 북서부의 챠르사다 마을의 한 회교 사원에서 일어나 50명이 숨진 바 있습니다.
현재 파키스탄의 정당들은 2월 18일 실시될 국회의원 선거를 위해 전국 각지에서 유세를 펼치고 있습니다. 베나지르 부토 전 총리가 지난 12월에 암살된 이후 발생한 소요사태로 총선이 미뤄진 바 있습니다.
A suicide blast at an election rally in northwestern Pakistan has killed at least 20 people and wounded more than 25 others.
Pakistan's Interior Minister Hamid Nawaz says a suicide attacker struck an Awami National Party rally in the town of Charsadda in North West Frontier Province today (Saturday). The party is a secular group made up of ethnic Pashtuns.
Nawaz says the bomb was detonated close to the stage inside a hall, as party leader and human rights activist Afrasiab Khattak was addressing the crowd. Khattak later told a Pakistani television network (Dawn Television) he escaped unhurt. At least two security personnel were among the dead.
In December of last year, a suicide bombing targeting former interior minister Aftab Sherpao at a mosque in Charsadda killed more than 50 people.
Today's (Saturday's) blast comes as Pakistani political parties campaign ahead of the country's parliamentary elections set for February 18th. The elections were postponed after unrest following former Prime Minister's Benazir Bhutto's assassination in December.
